![]() ![]() There may be a floating sensor in your coolant tank that triggers the warning light when the level drops. The most common reason for the coolant light to become illuminated is simply that the coolant level is too low. What causes the coolant warning light to come on? When this process fails, the engine temperature increases and triggers the coolant warning light. In order to keep your engine from welding itself together, coolant is pumped around the engine. The side effect of all these explosions is a huge amount of heat. These explosions move the pistons up and down which, in very simple terms, starts to power your engine. In order for your car to work, a series of explosions are created in the combustion chamber. ![]() Module went bad on ours.If the coolant warning light becomes illuminated on your dashboard as you’re driving along, it’s a certain sign that your engine is overheating. Follow the harness back and over towards the drivers side. Not sure if it's the same but on our 2006 ISX there is a coolant level module that is on the harness for the level sensor. My truck is also a 2008 Peterbilt 386 with a Cummins ISX Only way I was able to fix that issue was replace the entire tank assembly along with a new sensor. That will cause the sensor not work either. Another deal I had with my truck was the coolant got contaminated with oil due to a faulty oil cooler. I know exactly what you are talking about! I have to keep my tank completely full otherwise the sensor trips. That PACCAR design is really sensitive for its coolant level. So, even if you had a "little heater hose repair" and any amount of coolant was removed from system, (even just 2 or 3 gallons ) we still had to ran truck around to get it over 190F, then top off coolant again = and it may only take 1-2 cups, to fill, BUT those 1-2 cups made the difference between a low coolant alarm or NO coolant alarm. This even caused more time for any quick coolant repairs, Because we always had to get the engine completely up to over 190F temp, to unsure the thermostats open a little and then any little air pockets, would be pushed out of cooling system and then the coolant level could be really "topped off" good and customer would leave the shop and not have any low coolant alarms happen to him. I've seen those alarms come on (with CAT engines ) and it looks like the coolant level "should be" OK, but you still have to add more coolant and then finally (during running ) the sensor will say "OK" for the coolant level, consistently. ![]() Even higher than you thing it needs to be. If it has those clear plastic coolant tanks mounted to the right side/back side of radiator, then that coolant level really needs to be kept high. Frustrating! I tried replacing the sensor with no luck. The coolant isn't low, it doesn't leak, stays full all the time. The low coolant light will beep for a few minutes then go off and come back on.
